Reclaimed wood American flag

I have been wanting to do this project for SO long now.  To make an American flag from wooden pieces.  Originally I had envisioned using parts from an old wooden pallet, cuz I had two just waiting for me, but that just didn’t work out.  After several failed attempts to remove the wooden slats from the pallet {those suckers just wouldn’t budge!}, I decided it was time to rethink my design.
I decided to check out what wood pieces we had in our wood pile.  Our wood pile consists of split wood, as well as miscellaneous scraps & pieces of wood from other projects, renovations, etc.
After finding the necessary scraps for my project in our wood pile, I knew this project was possible and I was very enthusiastic to get it done.
Now, I don’t want to get to wordy in this post, so I am going to try and explain how I made this flag using mostly images with captions.
Our messy wood pile.
Assembling the scraps {on my pallet!}.  I cut pieces that were too long.
I knew I would keep the jagged edges, perfect.
After I assemble my pieces, I flipped it over to secure it in place.=
I attached the pieces using 3 wooden braces, small nails and a staple gun.
Flipped it over and I was very pleased, you can see the flag already….right!?!?!?
I primed and painted the entire piece white.
Then started painting my red stripes.
I bought star stickers at Michael’s and they worked perfectly for this!
Painted blue around my stars.
Doesn’t have to be perfect.
Peeled off the stickers and there ya have it! {don’t count….}
Lightly sanded with my sander to give it that worn look.
Yeah, much better!
Applied my favorite glaze to age my flag a bit.
All done!  I am so pleased at the outcome, better than a pallet cuz it’s more 3-dimensional with all of the mis-matched pieces.
I love the stars!
The sweetest husband a girl could ask for hanging the flag on our fence.
It is now hanging on our front fence.
God Bless America.
I am so very pleased with this project.   I really wanted it done and hung up in time for Memorial Day as a small tribute.
I must say, as I was working on this flag, I was moved several times with emotions thinking of all of our service men and women who are and have sacrificed so much for our country.  Men and women who have given up SO much, including time with their family and loved ones and especially ones who have given their lives to protect us.
May God Bless all of you and your families as we pay tribute this Memorial Day.
I personally thank you and appreciate all you have done from the bottom of my heart.
