DIY ~ Faux capiz shell chandeliers

As requested by my two lil’ ladies, they wanted their entire bedroom to be beach-themed. They are such beach girls so I did my best to honor their wishes, you can see their beach room here.  So keeping that in mind, I decided to make two faux capiz shell chandeliers for above their window seats.   These chandeliers did take a bit of time to do, but they were SO worth it and very cheap and easy to do!

There are a ton of tutorials on how to make these faux capiz shell chandeliers, like this one and these.

I basically did the same thing using waxed paper, parchment paper, a wife lamp shade frame, circular paper punch and a light kit I bought at Ikea.  It came with a giant star, on clearance for $5.00.  I tossed the star and just used the light kit.

Starting with an old lamp shade, I removed all of the trim and fabric.

Next, I ironed sheets of wax paper in between parchment paper and cut MANY “shells” using my circle paper punch.

I sewed strips of the circles together then hot glued them to my metal frame.

Once I was happy with the coverage, I added the light kit from Ikea.

I hung one in each of the girls dormers and they look fantastic.

What do you think ?!?

These chandeliers look so much like the real thing, you would never guess they were made using wax paper.

My girls love them and they really do appreciate the work that goes into handmade.

Plus, how could I say no to these adorable mermaid girls ?!?
